On Rochester's east side (the north flowing Genesee River is the divider) the Canal flows through a series of scenic small towns including Fairport and Pittsford, then through the suburb of Brighton and into the city where it intersects with the Genesee in Genesee Valley Park. Boaters can travel this corridor into downtown Rochester or continue westward towards Buffalo.
The Canal offers canal boating, recreational sports like rowing, sculling and kayaking, dozens of cafes and places to eat and drink. Pittsford's Schoen Place, in the heart of the village, offers restaurants and shopping, while the Canaltown area of Fairport is a favorite place for boaters to tie up and explore the town.
The entire length of the Canal has the original towpath, offering walkers, runners and riders an endless scenic, level trail.

Beach Ave.

Beach Avenue starts at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte and runs westward along the Lake Ontario shore to the town of Greece where it turns into Edgemere Drive. Beach Avenue is lined with beautiful waterfront homes that date from Victorian times to the mid-twentieth century. The lakefront here is on a bluff, offering protection from high water and lakefront houses have their own beaches with gorgeous views of both sunrise and sunset on Lake Ontario.
Due to the violent weather in winter these houses do not have docks- though some people put in boat hoists that must be removed each fall. However there are multiple marinas nearby on the Genesee River suitable for any size boat.
One great way to see Beach Avenue's beautiful homes is to start at Ontario Beach Park and walk the sidewalk west. At one point the sidewalk goes behind the homes and run along the lakefront bluff, giving you a glimpse of the views homeowners enjoy.

Charlotte and Ontario Beach Park

Charlotte, pronounced sha-lot, is the City of Rochester's connection to the lake and the river harbor. Ontario Beach Park is a city park that features a large beach with swimming (when conditions allow it), volleyball leagues, a boardwalk, a long pier, a vintage merry-go-round, picnic areas and weekly concerts during the summer. Sharing parking lots with the beach is the Ferry terminal on the Genesee River. Though the Terminal was built to service an ill-conceived Toronto to Rochester Fast Ferry, it now contains restaurants and events spaces with a beautiful view of the river harbor and the lake.
Charlotte is connected to the Summerville/Rock Beach waterfront neighborhood by the O'Rorke Bridge, a liftbridge completed just a few years ago. Below the bridge there is a walking trail that starts at the Charlotte Pier, continues south along the river past several marinas to a beautiful boardwalk above the river, through Turning Point Park and continues all the way to downtown Rochester. For almost its entire length the trail winds through the beautiful Genesee river gorge with its wooded steep cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. There are numerous fishing access sites.

View On Map

The Anchor Inn

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

O'Loughlin's

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

The Summerville Grill

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Summerville and Rock Beach

I grew up on Rock Beach Rd. in the White City area of Summerville on Lake Ontario. It was (and is) a truly great area to be a kid with a big beach, the river, sailing, some woods and Durand Eastman Park only a half mile away. White City did not get its name from any racial overtone- it was an encampment of white tents that people rented as summer cottages at the turn of the last century. The encampment was run by the trolley company to encourage use of its line that ran from downtown to the north end of St. Paul Boulevard. They built dancehalls, amusement parks and hotels. Today the area is home to the Rochester Yacht Club, several restaurants on or near the river, marinas and the US Coast Guard and Homeland Security Border Patrol.
It is primarily a residential area and all homeowners have beach access rights in their deeds. The beach, known as Summerville Beach or Windsor Beach, is a wide sandy beach about a half mile long. Waterfront housing on the beach is on a bluff and there is a permanent right of way easement in front of most of the houses. This path, whose address is Lakefront, is a beautiful way to walk through this relatively unchanged waterfront neighborhood, with views of the lake, the Webster shoreline, the Genesee River Piers and summer sunsets.
Housing in Summerville ranges in value from simple cottages with beach access at less than $100,000 to multi-million dollar mansions with private waterfront. Because we are on a national border with Canada, no homeowners may block walking access to the beaches in front of their homes. As a result, when the water levels are low, it is possible to walk the beach from the river all the way to the Irondequoit Bay entrance in Seabreeze and see some spectacular properties along the way.

Waterfront Weather Map

Click the Map Image to get the current weather conditions for Rochester's Waterfront neighborhoods:

Seabreeze Restaurants

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Summerville Shopping

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Summerville/Rock Beach Real Estate

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Summerville Boating

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Summerville Parks

Fishing Access
The Summerville/Rock Beach waterfront neighborhood has three small 'pocket' parks. At the northern end of St. Paul Boulevard where it meets the Genesee River there is the Fishing Access site, built on the former site of a US Marine Corps station. This small park offers fishing, parking and a great place to watch the yachts on the river and the sun setting on Charlotte, the waterfront neighborhood across the water. O'Louchlin's bar and restaurant is right next door and you can sit outdoors and enjoy drinks and food while watching the boat traffic

Tennis Courts and Playground
Head south on St. Paul a few blocks and you'll see a set of two tennis courts and some playground equipment. This is the Joseph (?) Park. Courts are public and free.

Tot Lot and Beach Access
Off of Rock Beach Rd. at the end of Bateau Terrace you'll find a large Tot Lot on the lakefront with playground equipment and a broad lawn sloping down to the beach. This is a great way to access the beach and the walking path along the lakefront.

Swimming Golf, Hiking and Biking in Durand Eastman Park
Finally, just to the east of the Rock Beach Rd extension you'll find Durand Eastman Park with its long public beach, golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., miles of wooded hiking trails with ponds and hills and a paved bike path that connects the Seabreeze waterfront neighborhood with the paths that run along the Genesee river all the way to downtown Rochester. This park was designed by a noted lanscape designer and it incoprates a very wide array of plant specimens and trees. Walking around the ponds you could easily feel you were hiking in the Adirondack Mountains.

Summerville Restaurants

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Genesee River South

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Genesee River North

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Erie Canal West

There is no abstract available for this page revision.
